Vintage Rolls Royce Leeds

Picture of a 1934 Rolls Royce motor car being used for a wedding parked up outside Leeds Cathedral.

I was walking through Leeds city centre recently when I saw this lovely old motor car. I chatted with the chauffeur who demonstrated the starting handle, something I have not seen used in many years.

I can understand why people use wonderful old motor cars like this one for weddings, style and not seen every day.

Since I took this photograph a good friend who is serious professional photographer suggested that I was now good enough to do wedding photography, with some practise. Whoa Neddy!

Steffe said... I know a guy who does wedding photos. He only shoots in RAW and can take thousands of photos in a few hours. And then only a few of those photos are ever used.

Fly Fishing on the River Aire - Yorkshire

This scene of a fisherman fly fishing on the river Aire here in Yorkshire is one that I never thought I would see and photograph less than a mile from my home.

I was walking along the riverbank looking to see if I could see the police divers in action on this stretch of the river Aire. The police here had spent a couple of days in and on the river nearby looking for remains or evidence. It was not a morbid thing me being there, my friend who is an editorial photographer was somewhere along this part of the river photographing the divers at work. So I thought I would stroll along and see if he was around.

I had never walked along this bit of the river bank, which is odd because I walk quite a bit. I had always thought that anyone fly fishing on the river Aire would be some miles further upstream. The above photo is slightly misleading because the rocks and grass on his left are a small island and not the bank of the river.

I saw a heron stood in the river Aire, a few hundred yards from this spot, but he was on the other side and my 70-200 lens is not really big enough for that. Also as I got nearer to the heron it flew off.

Leeds Photographer in Headingley

I called into Cafe Lento in Headingley to get some photos for a future post on the Leeds Photo Daily and little later whilst I was drinking a delicious latte this chap came in. He is James Hardisty a photographer with the Yorkshire Evening Post. James was at the Lento to get some photographs for a feature the paper was doing. I said hello and it turns out he knows my friend photographer Lorne Campbell, we swapped cards and James let me take his picture.

James was kind and asked if I was happy with the pics I had taken, knowing he was against the light in the doorway. So I took another of him outside photographing the front of the cafe.

I will post more from the cafe Lento in Headingley, Leeds tomorrow.

Tropical World - Roundhay Park, Leeds - Meerkat

A friend in Saint Paul, MN asked me if I had seen the meerkats in Roundhay Park, Leeds. I had to confess, they were news to me, I had not visted Tropical World set in Roundhay Park in many years.

So I visted the park and took some photographs of my visit for the Leeds photo daily, including the photo shown above. The meerkats are behind a perspex? screen, so the photo is not as clear as most of the photography on this blog.

Post Office St John's Shopping Centre - Leeds

I went into the Post Office in the St John's shopping centre in Leeds the other day to buy a few stamps. I soon changed my mind, I really do not mind queuing, but this was silly. So I took a photograph or two instead.

Here in the UK over the last couple of years the Post Office has done quite a bit of rationalisation and closed lots of branches. This has led to long queues at many Post Offices including as you can see the one shown above. Here they have introduced a ticketing system to cope with the numbers of people coming through the doors. The central Post Office I used to go to in city square has closed and is now a restaurant which is great if you want to eat but no good if you want to mail something.

KatieMarch 11, 2009 at 10:46 PM At least with this system you can sit yourself down or be addressing envelopes etc while you wait. Also the self service machines are ok to use. What I hate is the post office by the market... always full of drunks and druggies queuing up to collect their Grio money. I avoid it at all costs!

Suprising sight on road to Leeds, Yorkshire

I was driving over to visit Temple Newsam in Leeds to take some photos for the Leeds photo daily. I passed this chap, a rag and bone man, incredible! I did a smart u-turn, very pleased to have my camera on the passenger seat.

As a boy I used to go and spend holidays with my mothers parents in Plaistow in East London, in those days rag & bone men were a common sight. I recall once hearing the sound "raa boh" and going out to swap one of my mothers coats for a goldfish. It took me a long afternoon tracking down the cart to recover mums coat, else it would have been "wait till your father hears about this". Ooops.!

This chap did not mind me with camera, he just leapt out of the picture. We had a little chat about me not seeing another in the last 30 odd years. When I told him about the goldfish, he said that must have been a long time ago, very true.

His horse is called "Tommy".

Linda - Gold Coast said... I so remember the rag and bone man. Our rag and bone man would give us donkey stones (which were scouring blocks to clean stone steps - check out wikipedia.org "donkey stones"). What would he give today I wonder?

Tommy is such a beauty, I just hope and pray he is safe on the busy roads.

CRUMPLER Camera GEAR BAG, Meets a Cat!!

I was walking along the Leeds - Liverpool canal from Shipley to Saltaire when I paused to change lens on my camera. I put my bag down, and this cat appeared perhaps from one of these cottages adjacent to the towpath. She seemed very interested in my camera bag. So here we have cute cat with unknown (to me at least) name.

Yesterday on this blog I mentioned how easy it sometimes is to get a daily photo by just taking camera around during the day. Today I saw something I have not seen for many a long year, in fact not regularly since my childhood. Hopefully I will sort through todays photographs taken for the Leeds photo daily and it will appear here shortly.

Summer is coming to Yorkshire

Yesterday a good friend rang me and said I should pop round to her garden sometime soon, the frogs are back in her small pond. The photograph I took in her garden in Baildon, not far from Leeds shows a common frog.

On the same day I was out walking around the villages of Harden and Cullingworth when I spotted this butterfly. I only managed one photo of this Small Tortoiseshell (Aglais urticae) before it flew up and over a stone wall. Yesterday was the warmest day here in Yorkshire so far this year.

When I started this photoblog I was not sure I could take enough decent photographs of Leeds and its surroundings to post one photo each day. I now take more photographs each week than I used to in around 6 months. Also I am more visually aware of my surroundings and see things as potential photos for the Leeds photo daily.

Clamped in Car Park Haworth, Yorkshire

As can be seen in this photo if you should visit Haworth, please ensure you park within the rules, else this could be your car. Haworth has a reputation locally for being very strict about parking within the town. I was not surprised when I saw this car clamped in one of the town car parks.

Saint Anne's Cathedral - Leeds

This is a picture showing a front view of Saint Anne's Cathedral, which is the Roman Catholic Cathedral of the Diocese of Leeds, and is the seat of the Bishop of Leeds

The current cathedral building on Cookridge Street was completed in 1904, and was restored in 2006. Today this Arts and Crafts neo-Gothic style cathedral is a Grade II* listed building.

Cute - But Not in Leeds

Picture of a couple of Alpacas on a farm here in Yorkshire.

I stumbled on these alpacas by chance the other day, I had stopped to get a photo of an old wall post box, when I looked around I noticed what looked like 3 alpacas in a field opposite.

I walked over looking for an entrance to see if I could get a closer look and perhaps some photographs too. The farmer was nice and said help myself, so I did. I have only seen alpacas once before other than in pictures, but these were quite curious and shy and were happy at around 8 feet from me. Which was fine by me, close enough for my lens. Also in the field were some sheep and very free range hens along with a couple of donkeys who thought that 8 inches was far more interesting.

I am not really sure of the village boundaries so these cute alpacas are either in the villages of Eldwick or perhaps Gilstead between Bingley and Baildon. I know exactly where they are in relation to the roads but have no idea what the road they are on is called.

One thing I do know because the farmer told me, one reason he keeps them is that the deter foxes, with his flock of lovely brown hens that makes sense.

Experiment With Photography

This picture is a photograph taken last night in my lounge with me playing with my camera and a sparkler firework.

This is something I have never done before, but after a few attempts I quite like the result, it does show my name. One thing I did learn, it would have been simpler and easier with someone to help. I do not smoke so it took me a while to get the lighter to work, I bought it with this in mind a while back. I gave someone some indoor fireworks for her birthday and thats what gave me the idea of playng with the light generated.

Photography for me has been a journey and whilst I have learnt quite a lot on the road there is still much to learn.

Freddie Trueman Yorkshire Ale

This picture shows several bottles of ale, a brew called Freddie Trueman Yorkshire Ale, brewed by Skipton-based Copper Dragon.

This ale dedicated to Yorkshire fast bowler Fred Trueman was available at the unveiling on 18 March 2010 of a bronze statue to the cricketer in Skipton.

Decorative Tiles Seen in Leeds

I passed these decorative tiles on the wall of a building above a shop in Leeds city centre and could not resist taking photo and posting a little about them.

I must have passed this building many times in the last few months and cannot understand how I missed them before now. Perhaps they were covered up, the building looks newly decorated at least on the outside.

Leeds was at one time a centre for decorative pottery, having the Burmantofts pottery. These tiles have a vaguely classical theme, with a diaphanous female, a bust and the words Wedgewood, Minton, Worcester and Doulton, these all being famous potteries producing table china. I guess this shop on Commercial Street, Leeds was at one time a shop selling tableware.

Brewery Wharf in the Sunshine, Leeds

Saturday in Leeds was a gloriously sunny day, seen here a view of Brewery Wharf on the Leeds waterfront.

These people ranged around the tall brronze sculpture were watching a local band Last Of The Sirens, play on a small stage. The girl in the foreground is sat on one of the scattered barley pearls that form part of the sculpture and also seating.

The tall, 6m bronze sculpture in the heart of Brewey Wharf was installed in 2006 and is by local man Ian Randall from Selby. Ian Randall also created the tall "Fibres" sculptures at Foster Square station in Bradford.

Scotsman's Arms - Kirkgate, Leeds

This picture of a figurehead above a doorway on Kirkgate in Leeds city centre is the head of a Scotsman.

This building at 106 Kirkgate, Leeds was once a Public House called the Scotsman's Arms and all I know of it is that in 1881 it was run by Waller & Sons. Today the building has seen better days and it is home to an amusement arcade.

There are several pubs in Leeds with these carved heads over the doorway, I will try to visit them all and photograph them.
