Bridge at Granary Wharf

This picture is of the bridge over the Leeds - Liverpool Canal to Granary Wharf on the Leeds Waterfront.

The bridge is part of the original structure of the canal but a new roadway surface has been laid across it. The area that this bridge leads to has been redeveloped over the last couple of years with apartment blocks and the City Inn hotel.

This photo was taken at the end of the afternoon and it is perhaps a little over photo shopped into black and white on the left in the photo is Bridgewater Place.

I had intended to post today about the Middleton Railway here in Leeds but I was having problems with blogger last night and somehow managed to delete the post, then discovered picture I was going to use was far too small. Arrgghhh!

Old Machinery - Granary Wharf

This old crane is located adjacent to the Leeds - Liverpool canal at the canal side behind the Mint Hotel on Granary Wharf Leeds.

I am not sure if was originally installed hereabouts or whether it was acquired from elsewhere. I quite like this kind of former industrial hardware being used as a kind of public art. It adds to feeling of the the days when this stretch of the canal was the lifeblood of the means of transporting goods when the alternative was a horse and cart.

The building in the background just over the canal is Quayside House which houses Investec.

Canal Bridge Granary Wharf

This photo is a view looking down the Leeds - Liverpool canal from the Whitehall side towards granary Wharf and Leeds city centre.

I love that the canal system here in the UK is still a working machine almost as it was when it was designed and built as a transport highway around 240 years ago. The bridge across the canal in this photo dates from 1770-77, it is bridge no 226 and the lock in the foreground is office lock, this is because the stone building at the right hand side of the bridge is the Former Canal Company office building which dates from around 1816. Both the bridge and the company office are now listed building both listed as Grade II.

On the left in the photo is Candle House then the Mint Hotel both on Granary Wharf. The lower building behind the girl jogger is Watermans Place.

Today this canal is now mostly used for leisure and the towpath used by joggers, walkers and people riding their bicycles.

Yesterday I posted a drawing that was in an old Leeds trade directory showing the canal basin Leeds circa 1912.

My photo above looks across the canal basin and where there are now 4 modern red brick office blocks it was 100 years ago the premises of a stone merchants Boyes and Leach. The old crane in the middle of this picture is I think quite possibly the same one shown in the drawing.

To take this photograph I was stood on the edge of the canal basin outside Waterman's Place the recently completed apartment building.
