Leeds Pride 2011 - 5

Picture of the Gay Gordons from Manchester dancing at Leeds Pride.

Today this picture is one more in a short series of photos taken at this last weekends Leeds Pride event here in Leeds, Yorkshire.

These dancers are the Gay Gordons a Scottish Country and Ceilidh dancing group from Greater Manchester. The tartan kilt they are wearing is called Heritage of Scotland. I spoke with a couple of the guys and they were all I think Scottish but now living in the Manchester area.

The name the Gay Gordons is I guess alluding to the dance The Gay Gordons this being a popular dance at céilidhs and other kinds of informal and social dance. It is an "old-time" dance, of a type popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, in which every couple dances the same steps, usually in a circle around the room. The dance The Gay Gordons name alludes to a Scottish regiment, the Gordon Highlanders.

When I was at school in Oxfordshire we all had to learn country dancing and they used to bring in gels from an all girls school not far away. These lessons really did not do me any favours when I discovered the local disco a few years later.
